On Galicia Day we list 8 essential plans for a holiday in Galicia.
If you’re visiting us this summer and don’t want to miss out on all the magic of this northern land bathed by the sea, take note of these plans.
1. Watch the sunset in Rías Baixas.
It should be the first recommendation on the list. Here, in summer, the days are long and there is no better way to end them than with a sunset on the beach. We recommend choosing a spot on the coast from where you can observe the Atlantic Islands Park and admire the sun setting behind Cíes or Ons on the horizon.

2. Visit the cathedral of Santiago and walk a short section of the route to discover its essence.
A magical aura surrounds this pilgrimage which is one of the most popular in the world and a must if you visit Galicia.
3. Marvel at its gastronomy
From seafood products to the best free-range meats. Anyone who comes to Galicia has understood why we are the home of good food. Be warned: the portions are big and you might gain a couple of kilos after your holiday 😉.
Some dishes that should not be missing on your list are octopus á feira, empanada, omelette, padrón peppers, raxo and a good seafood dish.
In the same vein, we recommend a visit to an Albariño or Ribeiro winery with tasting included so that you can enjoy these wines.
If you prefer a more authentic plan, don’t miss the furanchos. These are private houses where for a few months of the year they serve the wine they produce themselves, accompanied by a few portions of homemade food.
There are hundreds of them in Rías Baixas and you can easily identify them because they hang a laurel tree on their door to indicate that they are open.
4. History and cultural heritage
The history of Galicia is rich and varied. It was inhabited by Celts and Romans at the beginning of our times. And it preserves incredible remains from these eras.
You will also find some very well preserved later buildings such as pazos, monasteries, churches and cruceiros.
The latter are probably one of the most characteristic symbols of Galicia and there are more than 12,000 of them scattered throughout our territory. It won’t surprise you if you have already understood that Galicia is Terra Meiga, full of magic and superstitions 😉.
There are different beliefs about their origin, but many believe that they were used to scare evil spirits and the Santa Compaña away from the roads and to protect travellers.
5. Visiting Fisterra
Feel like you are at the end of the world and be overwhelmed by the force of the raging sea and the sinuous cliffs that you will find there.
6. Get lost in a forest and discover the most natural Galicia.
Fill your lungs with fresh air and understand why Galicia has a reputation for being so green.
7. Visit Illas Cíes and Illas de Ons. Enjoy a boat trip and its beaches and hiking trails on two sets of islands that remain almost unchanged over time.
8. Learn a few words in Galician, fall in love with this land and understand why those of us who are lucky enough to have lived here feel “homesick” when we are far away.
