What to do in Rias Baixas when it rains
If you are wondering what to do on a getaway to Rías Baixas if the weather is not on your side, you will love this list of ideas and recommendations that we at Dena Hotel and Apartments have prepared for you.
Although the climate in Rías Baixas is fairly mild compared to other regions of Galicia, you should know that rain is part of the natural wealth of this community. Thanks to it, we have breathtaking landscapes of intense green and lush nature.
During the summer season the days tend to be sunny and average daytime temperatures easily reach around 25 degrees Celsius. In autumn, the weather changes and rainy days are more frequent.
Even so, there are plans that adapt to these circumstances and a getaway in Autumn or Winter to Rías Baixas is (very) worthwhile.
Plans in Rías Baixas when it rains
1. Enjoying the rain itself
Does it sound strange to you? Well, you should know that in Galicia we have more than 70 words to refer to rain.
Enjoying a stroll under your umbrella on the edge of the Atlantic is also an experience that will stick in your mind.
2. Take the opportunity to discover the gastronomy of this land.
We have talked a lot in this blog about how spectacular our gastronomy is. But we firmly believe that choosing Rías Baixas for a gastronomic getaway is the right thing to do.
We have 4 Michelin-starred restaurants in the vicinity of our restaurant, which we talked about in another post.
They offer a tasting menu option at a price that makes it irresistible: €40 per diner.
3. Do a wine tasting
Wine tourism and Albariño. Take the opportunity to visit a winery and learn how these wines are made.
Combine the visit with a tasting to understand why Albariño has become one of the most famous designations of origin both nationally and internationally.
4. Relax on the island of La Toja
Crossing the 400m bridge that joins O Grove with Isla de la Toja is the first step to enter a place full of history and curiosities that we summarise below.
In the 19th century, this island was uninhabited and cut off by land. It was a peasant who, by chance, discovered the mineral and medicinal properties of these waters.
The farmer had a dying donkey with a skin disease for which veterinarians could find no cure. Because of the man’s great affection for the animal, he refused to put him down and abandoned him on the islet of Louxo (the old name of the island). His surprise was when he returned a few days later to find it fully recovered from the disease.
This legend led to the study of the mineral-medicinal properties of these waters and the subsequent construction of several spas to become one of the most famous thalassotherapy destinations in Europe.
Visit the famous shell church and spend an afternoon relaxing in one of the spas. You can also visit the Hobbit village or the casino.

5. Visiting the cultural heritage of Rías Baixas
We recommend a visit to Combarro. This picture-postcard village is famous for its hórreos (raised granaries) and casas mariñeiras.
A short distance away you will also find the city of Pontevedra with a very charming and well-kept historic centre.
Come and enjoy Rías Baixas at any time of the year and let yourself be surprised. In our apartaments in Rías Baixas you will have different leisure options for your rainy days such as our gym, games room, cinema room and designer flats where you will feel at home.
We are waiting for you!
